Prospective Student Information

Welcome to USA’s Department of Radiologic Sciences!!

Thank you for your interest in our program!  If you would like to pursue a career in the Imaging/Therapeutic Sciences – you are at the right place!!!

High School Students

Important information specifically for high school students is outlined below.

â–¼   What is a Radiologic Technologist?

A radiologic technologist, also known as a radiographer, is a healthcare professional that performs x rays and other diagnostic imaging examinations on patients in the treatment and diagnosis of disease or injury. Radiographers use various types of equipment depending on their specialty, such as X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), fluoroscopy, or sonography equipment. Visit "What is a Radiologic Technologist?" to learn more about the profession.

â–¼   Program Information

The Radiologic Sciences program is set up in two parts:  The pre-professional component and the professional component.  If you are coming in as a freshman, you can declare Radiologic Sciences as your major, but understand that you must complete the pre-professional courses before applying to the professional component. When the general education (pre-requisite) courses are completed by the summer BEFORE you want to enter the program, you will be eligible to apply for the professional component of our program. Visit Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences program page to learn more about the program.

â–¼   ACT or SAT Scores Are Important

We do require that you take the ACT or SAT. We look at English, Math and Natural Science scores in calculating our admissions score. If individual scores for Math, English or Natural Science on the ACT are below 18, it is strongly advised that the test be retaken. The Department only accepts the highest scores, so there is absolutely no risk in re-taking the test a second or third time. Other Admission Requirements are listed on the Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences program page.

â–¼   Advising

Administrators, faculty and professional staff at South believe that advising is a responsibility and an opportunity for enhancing your undergraduate experience. Many situations will arise during your academic career in which informed academic and career advise is necessary. Visit our Advising webpage to learn more.

â–¼   Core Performance Standards

The core performance standards required for admission to, progression in and completion of the program in Radiologic Sciences include General Abilities, Observational Ability, Communication Ability, and more. Visit the Core Performance Standards webpage for more information.

â–¼   Join the Radiologic Sciences Club

If you will be completing your general education courses (pre-requisites) at USA, we invite you to join the Radiologic Sciences Club here on campus. Meetings held throughout the year will allow you to meet/talk with current students pursuing this career and learn much more about the program and the profession.  Our open house events are another great way to learn more about the program and profession.

â–¼   Program FAQs

We have created a Program FAQs page to assist with answering additional questions that arise.

  • Registered Radiographer transferees who do NOT have a baccalaureate degree and would like to complete the Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences at South should refer to the instructions outlined for the Bridge Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences Program.
  • Registered Radiographer transferees who have a baccalaureate degree in a major other than Radiologic Sciences, but choose to seek a second baccalaureate degree in Radiologic Sciences should refer to the instructions outlined for the Bridge Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences Program.
  • Registered Radiographer transferees without a baccalaureate degree who are searching for an online B.S. in Radiologic Sciences program should refer to the instructions outlined under the Online RT to BSR Program.
  • Registered Radiographer transferees who have a baccalaureate degree in a major other than Radiologic Sciences, but seek a second baccalaureate degree in Radiologic Sciences that is completely online should refer to the instructions outlined under the Online RT to BSR Program.
  • Registered Radiographer transferees who would like to complete classes in an advanced modality as a means of continuing education (non-degree seeking) should refer to the instructions outlined under the Radiologic Sciences Certificate Program.
  • Registered Radiographer transferees who already hold a baccalaureate degree in a major other than Radiologic Sciences and choose to study an advanced modality, without earning a second baccalaureate degree should refer to the instructions outlined under the Radiologic Sciences Certificate Program.

Transfer students must meet all the admissions requirements as stated on each program's web page.

â–¼   Transferring to USA

Students may transfer no more than 60 semester hours from a community college. To earn a B.S. Degree, students must complete a minimum of 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction in upper level courses (300, 400) at USA, must complete 15 semester hours in the major, and must complete a total of 120 hours.

â–¼   Transfer Equivalency Tables

USA’s Registrar’s Office has created the Transfer Equivalency Tables which allow students to quickly access an unofficial evaluation of how previous credits received from other schools, community colleges, and universities will be counted at South. If your institution is not listed, please email a PDF of your unofficial transcript to the Registrar’s Office at records@southalabama.edu. Please allow 3-5 business days for the unofficial evaluation to be completed.

â–¼   Pathway USA

Students from area community colleges may be eligible to participate in South’s Pathway USA program which supports a smooth transition for students transferring to South who have earned an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree from one of our participating schools. Pathway USA Participants will have access to a South Çàɬֱ²¥ academic advisor throughout their time at their participating community college. Visit Pathway USA for more information.
